Sounding: emitting a full resonant sound
Soundings is a continuing performance series designed to open the senses to new forms of music, sound art, and media interaction. Our interpretation of "sound art" will be as wide as possible, incorporating compositional, algorithmic, improvisational and interactive modes of production. Some of the axes of exploration might include technology-environment, noise-music, stasis-dynamicism, internal-external, abstraction-representation, ephemeral-concrete, micro-macro, theory-praxis...
Sounding: determining the depth of water at sea using a lead line
Soundings will create a relaxed and intensive listening environment in which the concepts, process, or simple fact of the sounds can be appreciated. We will bring new sonic experiences to Irish audiences by way of an eclectic mix of international, national, and local artists.
Sounding: a probe of the environment for scientific observation
We are additionally interested in events which incorporate video, performance and interactive aspects, so as to connect sound works to other artistic fields. Whenever possible we will have seminars, demonstrations, or other instructive components. But most important is the simple fact of being in the sound.
Sounding: the act of one that sounds
Our location is the restored Daghdha Space, John's Square, Limerick, Ireland. This decommissioned church has beautiful stone walls, a wooden vault ceiling, sprung floors and a video system. To this we add a state-of-the-art sound system -- sometimes two speakers, sometimes four, sometimes more! This creates a very special listening environment.
Sounding: a deep dive taken by a whale after building up oxygen reserves by way of a series of short, shallow dives
Soundings is curated by Dr. Robert Sazdov, composer, music producer, researcher and Course Director of DMARC and Robin Parmar, sound artist, composer, poet and theorist.
We are proud to be partnered with the University of Limerick through the Digital Media and Arts Research Centre (DMARC). A special thanks to Daghdha Dance Company for their past collaborations.
